Welcome to the BIG DRAW-Ruskin Schedule

The BIG DRAW-Ruskin is a season of sponsored drawing and arts events in Ruskin, Florida and around the Southshore and Tampa Bay Area. The BD-R is linked to the International Campaign for Drawing and invites & supports BIGDRAW events, workshops, classes (and a major community public art project) during the month of October; all open to the public and free (a few events require a nominal materials fee — which is noted in the description).

Commit yourself to a 2 day drawing marathon extravaganza. This intense all day activity is open to all students interested in increasing their understanding and perception of the visual world. Participants will work in a large studio with a massive set-up and live clothed models. Projects will be executed in charcoal on large 4'x5' paper. This 2day immersion in drawing will culminate in an informal critique and exhibit. What to bring, directions, & additional info will be provided upon registration. In the spirit of the Kuna Indians of the San Blas Islands, explore the process of drawing bold designs with layers of cloth and simple stitched thread to speak of local mythology, extended family and contemporary life. Create images of nature in everyday life, images conjured from dreams, fantasies and pure imagination … or contemporary comics, trademarks, labels and advertisements. Bring scissors and thimble, if you have them.

Jump into a hands-on introductory workshop in three parts that is focused on integrating drawing, painting, printmaking and photographic processes-- with digital media using Adobe PhotoShop/Elements. We will begin with a basic introduction to PhotoShop as a medium as well as a tool—and an ultimate collage machine. Then we’ll move to explore a range of digital processes and exploratory approaches to creating montage compositions, ending with a printed piece.

Experiment with compositions that may become works in digital form, or the basis of studies to develop in other media. Bring a sketchbook to start—a small drawing or drawing fragment, if you have it—and we’ll gather our sources along the way.

The ceiling of the state-of-the-art Bishop Planetarium is your canvas

This workshop is for anyone interested in how drawing can intersect with New Media outlets such as full Dome (google it!) or just anyone who enjoys pushing the boundaries of perspective drawing. We will meet in the state-of-the-art Bishop Planetarium at the South Florida Museum, in Bradenton. Exploring perspective beyond the traditional one, two, and three-point techniques, we will survey “distorted” drawings (anamorphic projection, distorted grid, fisheye, etc) and focus on fisheye distortion for full Dome projection. There will be time for workshop participants to create images which we will then process and project onto the planetarium dome. No experience necessary!

Participants will work with traditional drawing media; Basic materials will be provided. Bring your sketchbook, we will provide scanning capabilities to get your drawings up on the dome. (You may also bring your own laptop, Mac or PC, as long as it has a USB port—if you would like to work digitally.)

Participants will be working to create drawing(s) that combine disparate images, information and materials that have a meaningful significance to the individual artist. The workshop will explore the formal and conceptual properties necessary for constructing an informational drawing.

What To bring: **digital images printed on Matte paper.
If you have your own: Artist Brushes: a variety of Sizes, Pencils/Pens/ Scissors, Matt Knife/Utility Knife, Ruler, Needle/Thread, Small hair dryer to speed-up the drying time, if you have one

WORKSHOP PROVIDES the drawing paper, and all other art materials to be used. An assortment of the above will be available to share as well.

This workshop explores two direct drawing processes through which anyone can experience imagery coming alive on the page.

Touch Drawing is a simple yet profound process where the fingers take the place of pen or brush. Paper is placed over a freshly painted surface. Wherever it is touched, an imprint is made on the backside. Impulses from within take form on paper through the movement of the fingertips on the page.
Trace Monotype is a very direct drawing & printmaking technique that uses a stylus of some kind on paper that is placed on an inked surface. A sequence of many images can be generated through each process from spontaneous and/or premeditated impulses.

Using line and shape to explore means of opening space in the flat page. We'll consider the clues to space we all use in every day life, and how they can be translated into drawing. We'll explore a wide range of possibilities; including overlap, relative size, light and dark, pattern and texture, and focus.

We will use both charcoal and collage, in an exploratory and trial and error and 'painterly' fashion, to make drawings which invoke some sense of spatialty or openess or recession or... space. It is so familiar, and so very difficult to define. You should come away much more aware of the process of seeing, and of how you decode the complex spaces around you with such ease and accuracy!

Sure, you can talk the talk… but can you CHALK the WALK? Absolutely! Join local artist Cory Wright to learn about the time honored tradition of Italian Street Painting- with chalk as the medium and the pavement as the canvas. Cory will explain various techniques for working with pastels and provide valuable tips, as well as give a short presentation of Street Painting examples. Then as individuals or small groups you will have the opportunity to create your own sidewalk masterpiece! We’ll spend most of our time outside on our hands and knees so bring a hat and plenty of sunscreen! Also, you are highly encouraged to bring a picture of the image you wish to enlarge and recreate on the pavement, either a masterpiece reproduction or original artwork. Each participant will have a large taped off area to create in!

This is your opportunity to create or at least embellish a few memories! Using photoshop we will scan old photos that you bring in and collage them into new environments. You may want to add some drawing or digital painting to these as well. In the end all participants will choose their best memory and contribute that page to our book- each person will receive one copy of the completed book.

To bring with you:
*old photos - people, places, animals, etc.
* paperback book that can be cut up or written in. We will use lines of text from these books to add to our memories.

This workshop takes a lively approach to exploring the interrelationship between collage and drawing. Students will use Collage as a means of sketching and as a springboard for ideas in Drawing. Work will begin simply, becoming progressively more complex as students are urged to push the limits of the mediums and their ideas. As the work done in one medium assists and influences one's vision in the other, the collaboration between process and concept will encourage the production of less planned and more unexpected images.

To bring: Good quality scissors (very important!),
Stencil / Collage Material: Thin cardboard that can easily be cut with scissors (cereal boxes and other food packaging boxes will work), plus a small assortment of brown paper bags, newspapers, telephone book pages, magazines and other monochrome found paper

Explore traditional concepts of simplicity and using mind in Chinese art forms and approaches. The workshop will include demos and hands-on practice of traditional forms that present ways of seeing nature that use mind and heart to understand its essence, and then move to observation. These approaches will then be applied to individual drawings---taking traditional forms into contemporary expressions. Traditional materials of mo-shui (Chinese) or sumi (Japanese) inks and bamboo brushes will be demonstrated and used in this session.
