Welcome to the BIG DRAW-Ruskin Schedule

The BIG DRAW-Ruskin is a season of sponsored drawing and arts events in Ruskin, Florida and around the Southshore and Tampa Bay Area. The BD-R is linked to the International Campaign for Drawing and invites & supports BIGDRAW events, workshops, classes (and a major community public art project) during the month of October; all open to the public and free (a few events require a nominal materials fee — which is noted in the description).

This blog is your source for the latest information on BIG DRAW-Ruskin and area BIGDRAW events. You can use the Labels list to the right to find an event by date, host, age (we feature events for adults, teens, kids, and all-ages), location, etc.

MOLAS are: “A movable feast of walking pictures…” the symbolic language of earthbound man . . . “The sun-drenched families of red, orange, and yellow which . . . reflect the spoken and unspoken history of the mythic past and inventive present.”-MOLAS Folk Art of the Cuna Indians

In the spirit of the Kuna Indians of the San Blas Islands, explore the process of drawing bold designs with layers of cloth and simple stitched thread to speak of local mythology, extended family and contemporary life. Create images of nature in everyday life, images conjured from dreams, fantasies and pure imagination … or contemporary comics, trademarks, labels and advertisements. Bring scissors and thimble, if you have them.

Jump into a hands-on introductory workshop in three parts that is focused on integrating drawing, painting, printmaking and photographic processes-- with digital media using Adobe PhotoShop/Elements. We will begin with a basic introduction to PhotoShop as a medium as well as a tool—and an ultimate collage machine. Then we’ll move to explore a range of digital processes and exploratory approaches to creating montage compositions, ending with a printed piece.

Experiment with compositions that may become works in digital form, or the basis of studies to develop in other media. Bring a sketchbook to start—a small drawing or drawing fragment, if you have it—and we’ll gather our sources along the way.

Participants will be working to create drawing(s) that combine disparate images, information and materials that have a meaningful significance to the individual artist. The workshop will explore the formal and conceptual properties necessary for constructing an informational drawing.

What To bring: **digital images printed on Matte paper.
If you have your own: Artist Brushes: a variety of Sizes, Pencils/Pens/ Scissors, Matt Knife/Utility Knife, Ruler, Needle/Thread, Small hair dryer to speed-up the drying time, if you have one

WORKSHOP PROVIDES the drawing paper, and all other art materials to be used. An assortment of the above will be available to share as well.

Collage Elements: Bring ANY material(s) you respond to for possible inclusion in your work. i.e. photographic images, newspaper/magazine clippings, Xerox images, text, written letters etc. Recommended: Other stuff you might consider bringing to be used or deconstructed: Stencils, rubber stamps, dress patterns, wallpaper samples etc .Large Format Books: Photography/Art/History etc./Children’s Books/Old/Vintage Books/ Textbooks/ Atlases/Maps/Novels/Dictionaries/Journals/Accounting Ledgers

The sun City Center Art Club hosts BIGDRAW with a full series of free drawing classes in Sept. and Oct. taught by the Art Club teachers for club membership. There will be a BIG DRAW-OUT at the membership meeting on the 3rd Monday in Sept. An exhibition of all drawings produced from classes and at the DRAW OUT will be held on Oct. 11th, 3-6pm in the Art Room to celebrate THE BIG DRAW. Drawing Class Info – (PDF)

For those of you who own sewing machines, this is a chance to come and play using your machine as a drawing tool. We will be working with free motion sewing, where the feed dogs are lowered or covered to allow free movement with the sewing machine needle. Join us for sewing machine play time.

Supply List: Sewing machine with free motion capability (can drop or cover feed dogs). Please bring along your sewing machine manual, and your free motion or darning foot if you have one. Bring what you can or have, there will be some supplies available, but Sewing Machines WILL NOT be supplied.

Other sewing items you can bring are: A small selection of fabric and threads; heavy fabrics such as denim & upholstery fabric work well when starting out with this type of machine play. Scissors: An embroidery hoop, if you have one; Stabilizer, such as Stitch N Tear
